Guatemala Hope of Life
Recent Missions Trip to Hope of Life International (“HOLI”) in Guatemala
In March, 2017 my wife, Misty, and I had the opportunity to travel to Hope of Life International (www.hopeoflifeintl.org) in Zacapa, Guatemala. We encountered an amazing organization with truly God-anointed leadership, an inspired staff and impressive missionaries already on the field serving there. HOLI exists for two reasons: to meet the needs of the impoverished Guatemalan people and to lead people to a life-saving relationship with Christ. Saving Lives! That’s their mission statement. It’s that simple! HOLI has never lost sight of the fact that meeting great physical and emotional needs is not enough. If we don’t connect people to Jesus, all we have done is relieve their pain and discomfort for a season while an eternity apart from God stares them in the face. Carlos Vargas, the founder of HOLI, remains an on-fire evangelist and it was a great joy to spend so much time with him in Guatemala.
During our time in-country, we visited several villages; some of them so remote they were only accessible by a lengthy drive in 4-wheel drive vehicles up and over a couple of mountains. Indeed, in the remote Village of Santa Rosalea, Carlos shared with us that we were the first Americans ever to set foot in this village. We were able to do a food distribution there; then we broke into teams and visited virtually every home in the village sharing Christ and praying over the specific needs of each family. It was a wonderful time to simply connect with people in the name of Jesus! It was readily apparent to us that while our visit may have been the first for any American missionary, God had long before visited this village! In some homes (not all!) we found a strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ! What an encouragement that was to us. During our time at the base camp, we spent much time with Carlos and some of his key leaders discussing our hopes and dreams as well as the desire of our home church, SonRise Church, to become involved with HOLI. It was a fruitful time.
One of the more significant ministries of HOLI is their “Total Village Transformation” campaign in which HOLI connects churches in America with specific villages in the hope that the American church will adopt the village and commit itself, over a number of years, to pouring prayer, leadership, construction projects and other resources into that village. SonRise Church is seriously considering adopting a small village called San Felipe. This will open up numerous opportunities for the people of SonRise Church to pray, give and support the work of the Gospel and the ministry to the residents of San Felipe. It will also provide great opportunities for our SonRise family to travel to HOLI and to directly invest their time and energies in the village of San Felipe. We are considering two such missions trips in 2017 and more in the following years. It will be the privilege of Misty and me to be SonRise’s ambassadors on the ground in Guatemala planning and guiding the work for San Felipe. Please pray over what God wants your role to be in this grand Kingdom effort!
